Cake That! Showstopper – Chess Cake with Chocolate Ganache Filling & Vanilla Meringue Frosting
In my Technical Challenge for Cake That! I came runner up. Since that was probably the best cake I’ve ever made, I knew I had to up my game for the showstopper. I came up with loads of different ideas, using various techniques, colours, tastes and layers but I wanted something that would show some more skill which is why I’ve gone for this cake. Once i’d set my mind to it, I was determined to pull it off. This cake has had a lot of learning curves, in fact I made the frosting three times this week before I deemed it edible and I have had to pretty much…

Cake That! Technical Challenge – Decadent Raspberry & Chocolate Cheesecake
So this is the second cake I’ve baked this week. Both I’ve been incredibly proud of, one was a 7 layer rainbow cake with chocolate icing for my nephew’s third birthday, it was a huge success however that’s not the cake I’m sharing today. Today’s cake is a cheesecake, my favourite dessert. Last month I was invited to take part in Best British Bloggers & Euphorium Bakery’s Cake That! A baking competition centered around the structure of one of my favourite tv shows The Great British Bake Off. For the final three months of this series I’d have to share three bakes.. a signature bake, a technical challenge and a…

Cake That! Signature Bake – Double Chocolate Cake with Fresh Cream & Salted Caramel
Currently in the US, I’ll just be checking in for my flight home *sob* so as you’ve probably guessed, this is a scheduled post I prepared before I left. I was invited by Best British Bloggers to take part in Cake That! A bakery competition with Euphorium Bakery who will be launching their new website later this month. Not one to turn down any cookery challenges, I quickly accepted. Although, the thing that really got me was the judge was none other than The Great British Bake Off winner of 2012 (my favourite year so far), John Whaite! We have three challenges, one each month until the end of The…

Baking Times – Trago Has You Covered*
The Great British Bake Off is back! For me, it’s a sign that Autumn is rolling in, especially now that the show starts in September rather than August. When it first started I used to bake along, usually cake but sometimes other things too. Now that LM is at school I just don’t have time to. However, I’ve noticed through social media others have taken up the mantel and are sharing a bake a week. Personally, I’ve never really been an adventurous baker. My cakes are not the level of competitive baking so there goes my GBBO dreams. I can make something taste nice, but all too often it doesn’t…

5 Ways to Get Your Kids Involved in the Kitchen*
Over the last few months my daughter has taken an interest in helping in the kitchen, not me specifically but my mum (our kitchen isn’t exactly kid friendly). However I still love to see it! I didn’t learn to cook until I left home at 18 and had absolutely no life skills except beans on toast and fairy cakes. Everything I know I’ve taught myself from cookbooks (’cause we’re talking 15 years ago now and youtube was just starting out!) I think it’s so important to get kids involved in the kitchen, but I know for many they just like their food to magically appear on the table in front…
