Three Delicious Recipes To Use Up Extra Bread*

We’re a two person household, which often means when I buy certain things I struggle to use it all up before it’s use by date. One of these items is bread. A small load barely lasts as, and a large one we never make it through before it’s stale as we both regularly get bored of plain old sandwiches and we’re never up in time to have toast before school. Which is why I’ve been trying to come up with creative ways to use up the rest of the loaf. Bread is such a staple in so many households and it’s more versatile than you think! I’ve been using Hovis Best of Both loaf this week, with it’s mix of specially white and wholemeal flour which is great for growing kids.

Here is a run down of the three recipes I tried;

Stuffed French Toast

When I was a kid growing up, French Toast wasn’t a thing, what we had was “eggy bread” and my dad was a pro at it (it was like one of the only two things he could make!) It was basically bread coated in egg and friend, which you ate in strips dipped into ketchup. It was amazing. It wasn’t until I was 21 and in New York that I realised French Toast was something different. I had it at somewhere called Alice’s Teacup (sadly they don’t offer it anymore as this was 12 years ago!) and they were so sweet and there was so much syrup and powdered sugar! French Toast been a firm favourite of mine ever since, specifically the stuffed kind, so I had a bash of my own using this recipe. 10/10 would recommend and so quick and easy! I loved that you don’t need to use oil as I hate that friend flavouring.

Grilled Cheese and Tomato Soup Bake

Let’s face it, grilled cheese is an American institution and it’s one that I’m totally on board with. I loved grilled cheese sandwiches and so does my daughter. They trump the humble British cheese toasty (sorry!). And when I was in California a few years back I discovered something even more amazing, a grilled cheese sandwich dipped into creamy tomato soup (it must be creamy, none of this tomato and balsamic vinegar soup). Oh my days! I discovered this recipe that combines the two into one delicious dish making for a very hearty lunch!

Classic Chicken Club

Anyone else just really miss eating in restaurants? Just me? The chicken club was a go to of mine. Chicken, good. Bacon, good. Lettuce, tomato and mayo.. all good! And of course, the toasted bread to stop it going soggy. A real winner. But it’s not something i’ve ever made myself before, even though I often have all the ingredients in! So I had a bash at it for dinner, serving it with Halloumi fries and it was so good! Perfect way to use up the last of the loaf.
