Why You Should Get Away from Home in the Winter with Kids*

As a mum, holidays are always an important time no matter what season. Obviously, my family loves going away during the summer and that is when most parents feel they have to keep their children occupied. The six week holidays are a long time, so if we don’t get away and make it special, I feel like I am letting my daughter down. The same goes for the winter holidays.  During the autumn and winter months, my daughter gets up to four weeks from school and I don’t want her to stay cooped up at home.

I know most people don’t agree, but by the end of this post I hope they do! To try and convince you, I have put together a list of why it is important to get away from home for the winter.

Cheaper
Going anywhere in the UK during the colder months works out cheaper (except for Christmas in cities that host elaborate Christmas markets) because it’s considered off peak and there really is so much you can do that don’t revolve around sitting on a beach. You could go to London and experience the Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park, or go to a city that is hosting your favourite pantomime. Accommodation will be cheaper than if you were doing the same trip during the summer school holidays and it really breaks up those dark, miserable days. And here are some more ideas for winter staycations if you feel stuck.

Makes Everyone Happy
Seriously, there is a disorder called SAD that affects people’s’ moods. The cold weather and a lack of sun can make you depressed. What’s the best way to combat this? Go away to somewhere fun during in the winter. Okay, you might not suffer from SAD, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t get away from home in the winter. Waiting a full year for another holiday is a nightmare. At times, you just want to get away from the monotony of life. A winter holiday breaks up what can be a suffocating and predictable cycle.

Adventurous
There are only certain things you can do in the winter and the colder months, like skiing. Yes, you can do them at home here in the UK. There are dry slopes up and down the country but if you head up Scotland you can experience skiing and snowboarding on real snow. If, like me, you want your kids to have life changing experiences, this is one of them.

Revitalises
Any break has the same effect: it refreshes your mind and body. That sounds like some new age crap, but it is true! Life at home can start to affect negatively your frame of mind, which is why you need regular breaks throughout the year. The kids have holidays during the winter, so the winter is the perfect time to take the edge off and have a vacation.

I don’t know about you, but that sounds like a good enough excuse!
