Dressing Babies Up For Appropriate Weather*

One of the things new parents want to make sure that they get right is how they dress up their babies depending on the time of year. It is not hard to dress babies up during the fall or spring when the temperatures are generally quite comfortable. That is because there is very little guesswork that comes in unless it is an unusually warm or cold day.

This means when you have a pile of hipster baby clothes that are meant to be put on your baby during the cooler months since the material is meant to be warm then you will want to use it during cooler fall, spring, or winter days. But the middle of the road type of clothing is best for temperate times of the year. Let’s now talk about how to dress babies during the summer as that is a time when it can be confusing.

Summer Time Dressing Tips For The Baby

Summer days can be very hot as no one needs a rocket scientist to tell you or to figure that one out. This means you will want to dress your baby in clothing during the hot summer days that will not overheat the baby. Only light-weight clothing should be worn which can mean on super hot days, to only put on a onesie over the diaper and that is it. You will get plenty of cool ones by Lavendersun as they will provide you a large variety of summer clothing for the baby.

That also means on all summer days, the baby will need to wear a hat and even light pants and a light jacket for protecting the skin. That means also to minimize the time spent in the sun in the middle of the day when the UV rays are at its strongest. But the baby will need to be covered and that can also lead to overheating due to the fact that the baby is wearing a lot of clothing.

The baby will also need to wear a hat at all times for head and face protection from the UV rays. They have sun hats that can be purchased for babies and that will keep their heads and faces protected from the sun.

For babies that are over 6 months old, they can safely wear infant sunscreen which will eliminate the need for the baby to be dressed up too much outside. However, even with that, you will want to limit the time spent outside. That will be very uncomfortable for the baby. It is also important that the baby is kept hydrated during the times that he or she will be spending outside in the heat.

When it comes to dressing your baby indoors, you will want to have the air conditioning set to room temperature in the home which will maximize the baby’s comfort level. When it comes to dressing for sleep, put the baby in a sleeper that is made with breathable cotton which will keep the baby cool and comfortable.

Now you know how to dress your baby for the best comfort and safety during the summer. Let’s now talk about how to dress your baby up safely and comfortably for the winter.

Wintertime Dressing For The Baby

The weather is colder and in some areas, there will be snow! That will depend on how low the temperature does go during wintertime. But either way, because of it being colder, the baby needs to be dressed properly for winter. This means to dress the baby well enough to be comfortable and warm but not hot.

The rule of thumb is to add one extra layer to the baby which you can base it off of your comfort. If you are wearing a long-sleeved shirt with jeans and your baby is wearing something similar, and you are comfortable, then your baby needs an extra layer. That means to put on an undershirt or a onesie underneath, that is all you need to do. Do not add too many layers onto your baby in that case or in any case at all if you are indoors and the temperature is at a comfortable setting.

That means if you add the undershirt or onesie to the baby, do not add a sweater in addition to that. You don’t want your baby to become overheated which can cause a heat rash, fever, and dehydration.

Additionally, you will want to dress your baby comfortably at night. Don’t overdress your baby either at night or else your baby will not sleep. The baby needs to be comfortable to sleep. That means a comfortable and breathable fleece sleeper is ideal and will keep the baby warm but not too warm.

Another important thing to remember is when you are taking your baby to the car during the winter, take the winter coat off right away in the car. And place a blanket over the car seat instead after you strap the baby in there. A winter coat can reduce the effectiveness of how safe the car seat is. Make sure your baby is wearing a hat and mittens too and that can be kept on in the car.

Once you reach your destination, then you will be able to put the winter coat back on the baby and don’t worry, your baby will be kept just fine!

With those tips, you should now not think that dressing your baby is too hard to do in any of the seasons. But always remember one thing. Overheating the baby is worse than the baby not being warm enough. You want the baby to be warm enough for comfort but overheating can be quite serious. You can always talk to your baby’s pediatrician if you are still unsure of how to dress your baby for safety and for comfort. Especially if you get clothing that is made of a material that you are not familiar with. In fact, if you have any concerns at all, the pediatrician is just a call away.
