3 Signs Your Child is Unhappy at School*
It’s normal for adults to feel unhappy and stressed at work from time to time. When this happens for an extended period, we apply for new opportunities and move on. With that in mind, we can’t possibly expect our children to be completely happy at school throughout their entire childhood. There will be times when something is upsetting them, causing them to be anxious or making them feel distressed.
There are many reasons why your child might not be totally happy at school, from academic burdens, limited support from teachers or even bullying. Often the signs will be obvious; your child might come home crying if they have fallen out with their friends. However, other times it can be quite difficult to spot and they might not be forthcoming with their feelings, so you’ll have to do some investigating. Manor Lodge School have suggested three signs to look out for:
1. If your child is unhappy, they may start misbehaving both at home and at school because they don’t know how else to express their emotions.
2. Your child might be reluctant to go to school and use various excuses such as illness. They might even ask to move schools completely.
3. If your child refuses to do their homework and starts receiving poor grades, it might be a sign that they are struggling at school in some way.
It’s important for parents to ask their children open-ended questions at the end of each day, especially if they suspect their child might be unhappy at school. This will encourage them to open up about their day and they might even willingly share any problems they might be having. If you can’t get any answers from them, it might be worth scheduling a meeting with their teacher so that you can work together to resolve the situation.
