What Little Miss Read – Edie by Sophy Henn

It’s been so long since I’ve gotten around to doing a What Little Miss Read section on the blog, not because we haven’t been reading, because we have, a lot. It just happens to be a lot of books about Biff, Chip, Kipper and Floppy the dog and I’m not the one who’s been doing the reading! I guess that’s what happens when your kid starts school! However when this particular book arrived and we had a read through, I just knew we needed to do a very special post about it and finally today we had a chance to.

Edie is the newest children’s book by Author and illustrator, Sophy Henn. It’s not the first book by Henn that has popped up on the blog, you may remember when we reviewed Pom Pom is Super back in August and since we enjoyed that book so much, I was sure Edie would go down just as well but in fact, we enjoyed it more. A lot more.

The reason we enjoyed it more is because as you can see, I have an Edie of my own. Edie likes to help, but what she views as “helpful”, isn’t exactly helpful, in fact it causes chaos. Now as a parent the things she does will be something every parent has been through in one way or another which is why I loved it. I enjoy books for children that also appeal to the parent in some way and Edie definitely does that. Bless Edie, her heart is in the right place in everything she does and we’ve all felt that about something our own kids have done. It’s a very sweet story and Little Miss loved acting completely shocked at everything Edie does (despite having drawn on my walls herself haha).

The illustrations are gorgeous, very modern and I loved the minimalistic style and colour scheme. It’s the kind of book you could see on display in those Ikea style kids rooms (not my taste but I know a lot of parents who do like that). It’s very stylised as Henn has a distinct artist style that really appeals to us. It ties the book together perfectly.

It won’t be long until Little Miss can read the whole thing herself, it’s just the right amount of text for a learner reader!

We received our hardback edition as part of a “beret” special package from the publishers which included not only the book but a gorgeous beret so Little Miss could really match Edie. Everything else we already had and when put together (aside from the dark hair) the look was uncanny even down to that cheeky look on both their faces.

If you’re looking for a new book to give as a gift or just for bedtime reading, I cannot recommend Edie enough especially if you have your own helpful little Edie to keep an eye on at home!
