Preparing to Start Going to the Gym: A Beginner’s Guide*

Deciding to start going to the gym is a big step. Whether you’ve never set foot in one before or you’re simply getting back into exercise after a break, those first few visits can feel a little daunting.

What do you actually need to take? What exercises should you do? And, perhaps most importantly, what on earth are you supposed to wear?

The good news is that starting the gym doesn’t need to be complicated. A little preparation can help you feel more confident and make those first sessions much less intimidating.

Set Realistic Goals

Before you start, think about what you actually want to get from going to the gym.

Maybe you want to get stronger, improve your fitness, have more energy or simply make exercise part of your routine. Whatever your reason, having a goal can help keep you motivated.

Try not to put too much pressure on yourself. You don’t need to spend two hours in the gym every day to make progress. Starting with two or three sessions a week is perfectly reasonable.

Remember, consistency is much more important than trying to do everything at once.

Get Your Gym Clothing Sorted

Having comfortable gym clothing can make a surprisingly big difference to how you feel during your workout.

You don’t need the latest matching gym shirts or expensive trainers. Choose clothes that fit well, allow you to move comfortably and make you feel good.

Leggings, joggers, shorts, T-shirts and breathable tops are all great options. If you’re likely to get warm while exercising, look for lightweight or moisture-wicking fabrics. Just grab a few women gym crop tops or women gym sleeveless crop tops that feel comfortable and wash regularly.

Your trainers are particularly important. Choose a pair that feels comfortable and provides the support you need for the type of exercise you’ll be doing.

And remember: there is no particular “gym body” you need before you start wearing gym clothes. You’re allowed to take up space and feel comfortable exactly as you are.

Plan Your First Workout

Walking into a gym without a clue what to do can be overwhelming, so have a rough plan before you arrive.

For beginners, a simple full-body workout can be a good place to start. You might use a combination of cardio machines and basic resistance exercises.

Don’t be afraid to ask a member of staff for help. That’s what they’re there for, and most gyms will be happy to show you how equipment works.

If you’re completely new to exercise, starting slowly is important. You don’t need to lift the heaviest weights or run at the fastest speed.

Pack Your Gym Bag

A small gym bag can make getting ready much easier.

Pack your water bottle, towel, headphones, a change of clothes and anything else you might need. If you’re showering at the gym, remember your toiletries too.

Having everything ready to go means fewer excuses to skip your workout!

Don’t Compare Yourself to Everyone Else

This might be the most important gym tip for beginners.

It’s easy to look around and assume everyone else knows exactly what they’re doing. They probably don’t – and even if they do, they’re focused on their own workout.

Your gym journey is yours. You don’t need to lift the same weights, run at the same speed or look like anyone else.

Celebrate the small wins, whether that’s going for the first time, completing an extra five minutes on the treadmill or simply feeling more confident using the equipment.

Starting the gym is about building a healthier habit, not becoming a different person overnight.

Take it one workout at a time, be kind to yourself and remember that every beginner has to start somewhere. You’ve got this! 💪
