5 Ways to Look and Feel Your Best This Summer*
Woo! Summer is finally here. Even in the north of England we have been lucky enough to experience some heat! I have tried my very best not to complain about it. To enjoy it all because it’s so rare. While we’re back to seeing almost daily rainfall, it’s stall warm enough to go without a coat and you’ll need to carry your sunglasses at all time. The sun genuinely makes me feel happier. And I’m here to help you feel your best this summer!
However, I know as far as people who live in the UK go, I’m in minority. Our homes aren’t exactly built for hot weather. In fact, our homes are designed to keep heat in, even down to our walls being pumped with insulation. We don’t have air condition or swimming pools to cool off in! So when it’s hot, it’s hot all the time. Especially for many people at work. So it’s not really a surprise to everyone that some people are feeling a bit frazzled now. But fear not, there is time to live your best hot girl/guy summer!*
Stay Hydrated
This is going to be hard to hear (from personal experience, trust me). Iced coffee will not keep you hydrated! It is not good for you when it is hot outside no matter how much you need the caffeine due to the lack of humidity related sleep. Or the fact it tastes really good. You have to drink water. Water not only keeps you hydrated, but it’s good for your skin and hair. Neither of which are used to this sun. If like me, you’re not a fan of water, pop it into the fridge with some lemon or lime. Then serve it over ice cubes. The cold water will taste refreshing, trust me and you’ll definitely feel like you want to drink it.
Wear What Makes You Feel Good
You don’t need to conform to anyone else’s ideal body standards! If you want to rock swim wear, rock swim wear, if you don’t because you don’t personally feel comfortable, then don’t. Simple as that. When it’s hot outside you might not feel your very best self, for me I’m always worried about my make up running, for others they could be worried about how they smell. But with a little bit of research you can find work arounds for things like this, how to stop armpit sweat, and the best make up fixing spray (spoiler it’s Maybelline Lasting Fix!). It’s up to you to feel your best this summer in your own way.
Enjoy The Sun In Moderation
Just because it’s sunny outside you’re not obligated to enjoy every second of it. You don’t have to spend all day every day on the beach or in the garden like you would if you were abroad. You can come and lie in the cold dark house. Too much sun can make you sick, especially if you don’t have access to ways to keep cool. There is so much pressure on “making the most” of the summer here in the UK because it feels like such a rarity.. but you still have to live your life and not get too caught up in “summer madness” moderation is key. And remember while you’re outside, wear sun cream! The higher the factor, the better! No one is immune to skin cancer, not even Hugh Jackman! If you’d rather get the sunkissed glow without risking sun damage to your skin, why not book a mobile spray tan?
Take Cool Showers
When you feel all sticky from the warm air, it’s so tempted to jump into a hot shower to make you feel clean, but don’t, a cool shower will be more beneficial! It will cool you off, like taking a dip in the sea or a pool would if you were on holiday. When it’s hot and humid, you need to do things to keep your body temperature down and while you probably have invested in a fan (I absolutely recommend this silent turbo desk fan from Swan, it’s amazing!) a shower will cool you off much faster and is energy efficient! We don’t need to be using even more electricity with the cost of living crisis!
Eat Fresh
A bit of a weird one to some, but when it’s hot outside, embrace fresh food. It’s the one time a year you’ll feel fantastic about eating a salad! I love cooking with fresh fruits and veg during this time of year and it’s a great way to make you feel good from the inside out. Embrace this time of year to eat fresh pasta, salads and enjoy having grilled meat on the barbecue! That charcoal taste is unbeatable!
While on the whole summer does often feel like a chore here in the UK. Especially when you can’t sleep and you’re changing your shirt every few hours as you’re sweating. But there are still ways to feel your best this summer. So look for ways to enjoy it and embrace it because the sun really is a rarity and by winter, we’ll all be complaining about the dark nights!
* all bodies are hot girl/guy bodies, this is about feeling good about yourself, of course!
