What to Expect on a Winter Whale Watching Trip*

There is honestly no wrong time to go whale watching San Diego and its 70 miles of beautiful coastline. The Pacific Ocean’s marine life in this area is always thriving, even in the middle of the winter. Every excursion is unique; you can be sure that yours will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience that you and your group will never forget. You’ll have the best chance to see whales by going out to sea.

Whale Watching in the Winter

Mid-December through April is the perfect time to view some of the more than 20,000 gray whales as they make their annual 10,000-mile round-trip journey from Alaska to Baja, Californa’s lagoons. This is the furthest distance ever known for the yearly migration of any mammal. The area of the Pacific Ocean just out from San Diego’s coast is directly in the path of this migration. A whale-watching excursion at sea provides the ideal vantage point for these wonderous animals as they make their way to their annual migratory destination.

Usually, gray whales travel solo or in pods made up of two or three individuals. However, your may spot more traveling together during the height of their migration season. Gray whales are approximately the width of a basketball court and travel at an average speed of about six miles per hr. Needless to say, if these creatures are in the vicinity, you won’t be able to miss them. Even if you’ve been whale watching during other seasons, a winter excursion is a must-do, as you’ll see some different types of whales and wildlife than you’ll see in the other times of the year.

What To Bring & What You’ll See

Southern California’s weather is nearly perfect and sunny all year long. However, it can feel chilly when you’re out on the water, so it’s best to dress in layers for whatever weather the day may bring. Bring a cozy jacket or sweatshirt (fleece is ideal!) to make sure you stay warm. Wear comfortable closed-toe shoes to easily move around on the pier and boat. Also, bring sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat, binoculars and of course, a good camera. The tour company will provide snacks and drinks, but you can also bring your favorite picnic lunch and beverages if you like.

On a typical winter at-sea whale watching excursion, there’s an excellent chance to observe:

  • At least one type of these majestic marine mammals in all their glory; in the winter months, you’ll see predominately gray whales and possibly humpbacks.
  • Glimpses of whales rise up from the sea as they glide through the water.
  • These gentle giants generate enormous splashes as they leap from the ocean.
  • Other sea life in their natural habitat, including sea lions, dolphins and various species of fish.
  • Spectacular views of the beautiful San Diego skyline from different perspectives.

When you’re eager to go on a unique adventure, schedule a sea excursion to experience gray, blue or humpback whale watching San Diego. Whatever season you choose, you won’t be disappointed. Get ready to experience one of the most fun activities in which you and your family can participate while vacationing in the most beautiful city in Southern California.
