As you get older, you come across obstacles you never expected would be obstacles when you were a child, and one of these such obstacles is buying jewellery. When you’re a kid, you pop into whatever high street store and you’re attracted to tall the shiny, brightly coloured objects that cost your pocket money only. But what about when you’re an adult with an income and you want to buy some jewellery as an investment. Do you know what you’re looking for? And if not, this is why doing your research is important.

Today I’m going to be answering some questions about black diamonds that will hopefully help you see why they’re a worth while investment.

Are Black Diamonds Real Diamonds?

Yes! Black diamonds are real diamonds as they’re the same chemical composition as the more popular colourless diamonds. Like with their traditional counterparts they symbolise eternal, flawless, and unchanging love, making them perfect for an engagement ring. Black diamonds are also associated with passion, action and energy. A black diamond ring would really stand out from the crowd in comparison to a colourless diamond.

The colour of black diamonds is believed to be caused by graphite. Unlike their colourless counter parts, instead of the structure being solid crystal with identifiable natural lines, black diamonds consist of many small crystals all stuck together in random formation. And although both score 10 on Mohs scale of mineral hardness, black diamonds, due to their composition are harder and more durable.

Are Black Diamonds More Expensive Than White?

Funnily enough, although black diamonds are rarer than white, or the traditional colourless diamonds, the generally seem to cost less. The main reason for this is the lower demand. Colourless diamonds are still the more popular choice in engagement and eternity rings, along with other jewellery. Where as a black diamond is still a much more niche gemstone. However there is a growing demand for black diamond pendants, and other statement pieces.

What Are Some Popular Settings for Black Diamonds?

Black Diamonds look great in any setting and for any piece. I personally love black diamond earrings. However if you’re going for an engagement ring setting a halo one with tiny colourless diamonds surrounding one black diamond is popular or a solitaire, making the black diamond the focus. This looks fantastic with a white gold or platinum band. In fact, Black Diamonds always look great when paired with white gold or platinum, be it with necklaces, earrings or rings.

Black Diamonds are a unique and a totally modern take on traditional diamond jewellery, they become more popular every year, especially for more non-traditional couples looking to tie the knot.
