5 Date Ideas for People with Disabilities*
When it comes to love and dating, there is no discrimination, everyone is entitled to the chance to find their happily ever after. The sad part of course is, those with disabilities still have it harder than those without. And that doesn’t matter if it’s a visible or hidden disability. Thankfully though, the world is (slowly) moving towards a fairer future and thanks to the internet and wonderful bloggers and vloggers out there, everyone has a helping hand when it comes to dating, whether they’re able bodied or disabled. Thanks to wonderful people on YouTube like Jenna Farmer, dating doesn’t seem like such an inaccessible life goal for those with disabilities.
And to help with this, and support accessible dating, here are five date ideas for single disabled people;
Bowling
Baring in mind this ultimately depends on the disability (might be best to speak to your date, especially if you are using a amputee dating sites), for the most part though, it’s accessible even if you’re a wheelchair user. Bowling used to be a peak dating activity along with the cinema or a meal out, but it seems to have fallen into obscurity and I feel it’s time to bring it back.
Live Music or Performance
These days most venues for live music or performance art are accessible which makes it a great option for a date. There is a chance you’ll both be seated and you won’t need to constantly find stuff to talk about while spending valuable time together.
Picnic in the Park
This is also a COVID friendly one as woo, fresh air! Soon the weather will be starting to improve and we can get out and about more, that means opening up to more places you can go for dates. A picnic in the park is a great one for people of all abilities. You don’t need to worry about accessibility or space. You can each bring your favourite dishes to share with each other and it makes for great conversation.
Pub Quiz
This is a good one if your hours for dating feel like they’re strictly in the evening. A lot of locals these days host a pub quiz, they’re usually good fun and it’s a great way to see if you can work together. You can have a few drinks, a good laugh and maybe even try and win a prize.
Visit a Museum/Art Gallery/Aquarium
We should call this one “visit a venue”. Visiting a venue like a museum, art gallery or even an aquarium is a great way to explore tastes and interests. Not only that but they usually involve a slow paced, calming atmosphere which can take any pressure off something new.
Although society has a long way to go in making everything in life fully accessible, it is starting to move and because of that there are so many great date ideas that work for both able and disabled people. If this is something you’re embarking on, I wish you the very best!
