5 Reasons to Buy Antique Jewellery*
This piece is an #AD in collaboration with Carus Jewellery.
I don’t know about you but I’ve always been a sucker for anything vintage and antique, especially if I know there is a story behind it. It just feels more special than something bought new in a store these days. Probably to do with the fact that it feels like we’re living in such a consumer world, that walking into a store and swiping your credit card is the done thing! But with something vintage or antique, you know when it was originally sold and purchased it wasn’t as easy, and more so, you know that there would be fewer made than anything mass produced like what we have these days. I’m thinking in particular about antique jewellery, like what you can find at Carus Jewellery.
There are loads of valid reasons as to why you should buy antique or vintage jewellery, here are some of my personal favourites;
The Quality Is Better
As I mentioned above, antique jewellery will not be mass produced an this means it’s of better quality. If you’re looking for something timeless that you can eventually pass on to other members of the family, go for something that already has history. Vintage jewellery is almost always going to be hand crafted and that same love, care and attention to detail doesn’t go into modern day reproductions, unless you are paying through the nose for something bespoke. So not only is the quality better but you’ll be paying a fraction of the price.
Better Priced
As I mentioned above, buying vintage is actually a great way to get something really special without going the bespoke route. You get a beautiful, well made and hand crafted piece for a lot less and it’s something that doesn’t lose it’s value. It’s already gone from new to old before buying it, so in a way in can only increase in value as certain metals and stones come back into fashion. Not only that, did you know that if you buy vintage or antique jewellery at auction it’s VAT exempt?
Makes for Great Statement Pieces
If you’re looking for a statement piece, then vintage jewellery is the way to go. Vintage and Antique jewellery is always beautiful and eye catching, especially if it’s been well looked after. The understated style is something much more modern so if you want to make a statement with your jewellery without getting too tacky, source something antique like this absolutely beautiful Tahitian Pearl Flapper Style Necklace.
It’s Sustainable
It’s 2020, no one has any excuse for not thinking about the environment and the impact that we as humans is having on it. We should all be finding ways to be more sustainable, and one of the ways you can do that is to buy antique jewellery. It takes a lot of resources to mine for gems and then all the factory power into producing the jewellery. Not only that, you’ll be supporting small businesses as a lot of of antique dealers are one man show or a family business.
It’ll be Unique
Finally, if you’re looking for something special, for example, an engagement or wedding bag, antique is the way to go. You want something that expresses the wearer which I don’t always see in generic modern rings. If you go for something with some history, you also know it’s more likely to be one of a kind these days, vintage jewellery is timeless, without a doubt. And if you go in the direction it shows there is a lot of thought behind the proposal.
Hopefully the next time you’re shopping for jewellery, you’ll give vintage and antique pieces more thought and consideration!
