5 Ways to Make Your Home More Eco Friendly*

You must have been living under a rock to have missed the discussion surrounding climate change and the effect it’s having on the environment. It’s finally being recognised as a world wide emergency and although it may seem that it needs to be our government and big companies who need to be making changes. But realistically everyone should be doing a bit to reduce their carbon footprint. Luckily, we live in a world where you can make changes to your lifestyle and your home to help combat climate change and global warming before the damage is irreparable.

Here are 5 ways you can make your home more eco friends, from the big ways to the small.

Install Solar Panels
I’m starting with the big one, switching to solar energy. If you really want an eco friendly home, this is the way to go as one of the biggest factors in climate change is the burning of fossil fuels. It will be a huge cost up front to install them, but after that you’ll be providing your home with clean, reusable energy. They are a long term investment and the upkeep of them isn’t as expensive as you might think and they can last upward of 20 years before needing to be replaced.

Switch to LED Bulbs
If solar panels are out of your budget, try switching from fluorescent bulbs to LEDs. They’re more energy efficient and although they give off the same amount of light they use less energy, this is better for the environment and will save you money on your electricity bill. Look into LED Suppliers to switch your bulbs today.

Be Mindful of Your Water Consumption
A lot of people don’t think their water usage affects climate change, but it does. It takes a lot of power to clean water so the more you use, the more it needs cleaned to be used again. Don’t leave your tap running while you wash your face or brush your teeth, pick a shower over a bath and don’t do laundry more than is necessary. If you want to be more eco friendly, you could even switch to a low flow shower head.

Recycle Recycle Recycle
The first thing people think of when they want to be more eco friendly is recycling and it’s a good on to get started with. It something you can get your children involved in from and early age, Pinterest has loads of recycling resources you can download to help you visibly teach your children about what can and can’t be recycled.

Create Your Own Compost
Okay, so this isn’t for everyone, but it works! Buy a compost bin for your back garden and fill it with left over food scraps, you’ll be surprised just how much of your food waste will break down and make a good compost. Be sure to check out just what you can put in your bin before you get started.

It doesn’t have to cost you the Earth to be more environmentally friendly, but it may cost us the Earth if we don’t all start changing our ways.
