After School Activities to Explore Based on Your Child’s Interests*
Once your child reaches school age, you’ll find that it takes up most of their day, but that doesn’t mean that they have to spend the evening vegging in front of the tv. You might find they feel like they need something else after school finishes, something that plays on their own personal interests and lasts longer than a designated class. Many schools such as Cokethorpe, Senior School Oxfordshire, offer extensive after school programmes with an extensive array of clubs your child can join. These clubs help your child grow as a person and can give them skills that may come in handy as they get ready to leave school. If you child’s school doesn’t offer anything after hours, have a look in your local area. Even small towns like the one we live in have after school clubs, Saturday classes and summer activities you can enrol your child in.
Here are a few clubs you should look into depending on what your classes your child enjoys in school;
Drama
If your child enjoys drama or if that’s not offered, the end of year or Christmas productions, it may be worth looking for a Local Youth Theatre club. Not only do these classes give your child a chance to perform, but they’re great for character and confidence building. Some of the more elite offerings can even act as a stepping stone to a career in the entertainment industry.
PE
If your child’s favourite class of the week is PE, look into local Sports Clubs. Most towns and cities have a youth football league where they’ll play other towns in the county. Gymnastics is another popular one and most places have an assortment of dance classes. If you feel your child needs a little more discipline it might be worth looking in to karate. A local sports centre will probably have a list of their after school clubs, and swimming pools usually have lessons on offer.
Music
Music is always a popular subject with children, and most feel they don’t enough classes while in school. If this is your child look for local instructors and have your child learn an instrument. In our home town we have people who teach guitar, piano and even violin after school hours. It’s a great hobby to have.
English
If your child really enjoys English and reading, head over to the library and see if they offer any fun activities for your child to do out of school. Most council run libraries have on going activities during school holidays that inspire children to read more.
Science/Geography
You might not see the connection at first, but stick with me. If your child really likes science have you considered enrolling them in Scouts or Brownies? These clubs teach a lot of valuable life skills, help your child to make friends and to embrace nature which isn’t something most kids get to do much these days. Science & Geography are usually the subjects you’re most likely to find yourself doing experiments and experience the great outdoors in, so if those are popular subjects with your child Scouts or Brownies could be the after school club for them!
I’m a firm believer in extracurricular activities and try and encourage LM to join as many as I can financially afford. I want her to enjoy getting out after school in a safe environment doing what she loves most.
