3 Ways to Have a Low Maintenance Garden*

Some people are born with a green thumb, some people aren’t, I fall into that second category. I want to garden, I do.  I want to have beds of beautiful flowers, grow my own veg and herbs, sit outside and enjoy the fruits of my labour.. but no matter how hard I try, it’s just not me. So my mum looks after my garden, and she enjoys it as she only has a small patch in the back to look after at her house (it’s too dark in the front so it’s just gravel as nothing would grow for her).

Not everyone is lucky enough to have someone like my mum to look  after their garden. So here are 3 ways to have a low maintenance garden;

Hire a Gardener
If you want a beautiful garden, and you have the money so you don’t have to be the one to look after it, hire a gardener. You’ll be able to find a local garden service through the yellow pages or even through Google. These people make it their life work to look after your garden so you don’t have to. You can meet with them and discuss exactly what you want tended to, maybe you simply want your lawn cut, or hedges trimmed. Other people like their flowers planted and watered weekly. These are the people who have the green thumb, so you don’t need to work if yours is just a standard peach colour.

Keep Plants in Pots
This is the middle of the ground option. You want plants, but you’re the one who will look after them but you really aren’t a huge fan of gardening. Buy some big pots, fill them with compost or “dirt” and either plant seeds if you want to grow something from scratch or buy ready grown plants from the garden centre. As long as they get some sun light, are water regularly and you keep the bugs away you shouldn’t have any issue keeping these alive. You can get all different kinds of pots, window boxes and even hanging baskets so if you feel like your garden is lacking colour you can add a bit without having to do too much work.

Pave Some Areas
Finally, the easiest way to have a low maintenance garden that is still practical and usable, pave or gravel the whole place. You’ll still have an outdoor area but it needs very little care. Maybe once of year you’ll have to pain your fence, or brush the gravel back into place after a high wind but that is about it. A lot more people are opting for this now as you don’t need to worry about cutting the grass or weeding, or planting. The area is practical for children or for entertaining, it’s easy to keep clean and mess free and you don’t need to worry about it going wild. Sorted.

If I had the money, I would 100% pave my garden. I’d miss the greenery but we’re lucky there is a grassy area outside both my own and my parents house for LM to play on.. although at nearly 7 I think she’d even prefer a paved area to draw on or practising her skipping!
