Guest Post // Claiming Compensation as a Victim of Abuse*
As someone who has suffered Domestic Abuse at the hands of my ex I feel like it’s important to raise awareness and get all the facts for other people in the sitation I was in 5 years ago. I really hope this guest post by Gina helps women and men out there, read below how you could be entitled to compensation that could be the boost to help you feel like you are financially able to start again. Not everyone is as blessed as I was to have parents to help them out.
If you’ve been abused in the past, it can be hard to overcome the physical and mental injuries that can stay with you for a long time. And, although claiming compensation will not help you overcome your experience, the money can help towards things that can. This can be towards a new house, new items of clothing or anything you feel will help you overcome the ordeal you have experienced. Once you have won a case with CICA, the money is yours to do with what you want.
Claiming compensation doesn’t have to be an ordeal. In order to claim, you will need to get in touch with the government CICA scheme. Once you’re on the website, you can apply for compensation yourself, all you will need to do is fill in your details and follow the instructions on the screen. From there, you will be asked a number of questions and may be contacted further.
If you would rather not be put through the questioning process, you can also hire a solicitor to go through the process for you, ensuring you are away from proceedings. Solicitors such as those from CICA UK, will work on your behalf on a no win, no fee basis, and will take no more than 25% of your winnings if your claim is successful. Compensation from CICA can be up to £11 000, and you can claim for a range of different injuries and types of abuse. These include abuse at the hands of a partner, family member or if you have been a victim of rape. You can also claim if the damage inflicted on you is mental abuse and nothing more.
It’s important to remember that you are not what has happened to you, and the injuries that have effected you should not define you. However, sometimes it may feel like this is the case. There are many ways to overcome your ordeal, and these include speaking to your family, friends and loved ones in order to get help and advice. You can also speak to someone professionally, which you can organize yourself, or, it can be organized on your behalf by your GP.
