Top Mistakes of Your Early Twenties*

No matter when you went through your late teens and early twenties, you are sure to have fallen victim to some of the most embarrassing fashion and style faux-pas thanks to the blessing of retrospect. From questionable style and accessories to more permanent markings on your body and wild and whacky hairstyles, the list just goes on and on. Here are a selection of the worst and most embarrassing faux-pas’ I suffered.

Following Fashion Trends
The early noughties were the most iconic time for questionable and shocking fashion moments- with only the likes of Girls Aloud, Paris Hilton and co to blame. From the loop belt and denim cargo trousers to cropped jumpers, cardigans and waistcoats- naturally with a loose tie you are sure to suffer at least a cringe when looking back at old memories.

With stores such as Jane Norman, Quiz, Internacionale and brands such as Von Dutch, Juicy Couture, Babyphat and Kangol any teen was desperate to get to the town centre with their friends to get the latest release before heading in to town for a night filled with the most iconic Scooter, Darren Styles and N-Trance anthems blasting.

The Stylish Tattoo
How can anyone forget the fashion tattoos gone by- from getting the latest design to match Victoria and David Beckham’s tattoos to the tattoo you got at 4AM in Ibiza with no recollection. Tattoos although at the time seem a great idea may not be the investment you think they are.

If you were a teen in the noughties, you should be more than familiar with the sight of a lower back tribal design, Chinese lettering, barbed wire on the arm and even the odd script tattoo.

If you have invested in a tattoo and instantly regretted it, there are still options for you- with treatments such as laser removal becoming more and more common, affordable and popular there has never been a better time to erase the mistake.

Hairy Moments
No blog about the faux-pas’ gone by would ever be complete without an honourable mention to the hairstyles that at the time seemed iconic but not are simply a bad memory and a headache. From the curl-crimp look, flipped out ends, spiky curls, mascara-coloured hair, zig-zag partings and the harshest and blondest of highlights- the noughties definitely were all about hair.

One of my favourite memories of being a teen was when me and my friends decided it was a great idea to DIY dye our hair with the lightest shade of Clairol Nice’n’Easy we could get our hands on- á la Christina Aguilera– needless to say that it didn’t go quite as planned and more of an ombre effect was achieved rather than an even, luscious colour.

Although it may make us all cringe and blush a little, our teenage years and early twenties couldn’t have been at a better time- before Instagram, Snapchat and Facebook took over any night out and life simply being about enjoying yourself, whilst keeping up with all of your favourite pop stars.

I hope you’ve enjoyed my light-hearted take on the noughties and make sure to stay tuned for my next post.
