Using Technology to Help with Home Learning*

There are undeniably various pros and cons to technology, especially when it comes to our children and their screen time. Fortunately, technology can be used in a variety of positive ways, particularly when it comes to helping your child with their home learning during lockdown. Schools are uploading online resources that pupils can download, allowing them to continue their work at home. Even without direct input from your child’s school, there are an abundance of downloadable learning tools on the web. I have teamed up with an independent co-educational school in Hampshire to offer parents the following advice.

All students learn in different ways and, since technology provides a more flexible learning experience than a standard lesson in school, children are able to move at their own pace during their home lessons. One child might use YouTube to help them with a certain topic, while others might prefer to complete online educational games. Children who find the work set by schools too easy can find slightly harder material that is better suited to their abilities.

Since most children love spending time on their digital devices, many of them might feel more motivated to learn at home if they’re given a chance to use technology. There are many educational video games, apps, videos, and other tools online that can aid child development and keep them engaged. Vloggers are able to share crafting tips and teachers are able to provide lessons online using video conferencing tools.

Another benefit to technology with regards to a child’s learning experience, is that it allows parents to stay connected to the teachers and explore the curriculum. This allows parents to become more involved in their child’s education. In years gone by, they had to rely on what their kids told them after school, but now everything they need is readily available on the World Wide Web.
