How to Wear Smart Casual this Summer
A few years back there was only casual and formal, there was a line and you knew what kind of clothing fitted into what category. However, in today’s fashion world the line is blurred and there are so many sub categories now, that shopping for a particular dress code has become a little harder. Smart casual is probably one of my favourites because it’s my style (I mean the one that isn’t slobby school run mum with top knot, leggings and smock dress) but how would you even describe it? It’s possibly one of the most confusing dress codes so here are a few things to consider when rocking the smart casual look this summer;
Do Some Research
As the style of smart casual is so hard to define, the best way to decide how you should dress is by doing a little research. If you’re going to an event, check out where it’s being held. What sort of people are going? Why are you going? Is it a dinner, an awards ceremony or are you networking? Is this a personal or work event? Before even deciding on your smart casual outfit, finding out some background can really help inspire what you’re going to wear. Also, look at the weather, smart casual doesn’t look good if you’re sweating up a storm!
Wear Something that’s Comfortable
The beauty of smart casual is the fact you can wear something you find comfortable. For example, if you prefer to wear trousers like these from Chums, you can wear them! In fact, as long as they aren’t cargo pants or jeans, you can wear them. If you prefer dresses you could wear a tea dress, or a wrap dress. The most amazing thing about smart casual is the fact that the casual side is the comfort, no toe pinching court shoes, if you want to wear pumps, or brogues, go for it. No tight ill fitted suits, for a for a light blouse and some straight legged trousers.
Could You Wear It Day and Night?
And finally, the number one question I ask myself when selecting a smart casual outfit, could I wear this during the day and in the evening without turning heads or raising eyebrows. I’m not talking to a night club, but could I wear it in the evening for a drink or two, or to dinner and not feel under dressed. And in the same vein, could I wear it during the day without being over dressed? Even if I needed to make a slight change like add some more bling, or change my shoes. Fundamentally I should be able to wear smart casual during the day and in the evening, that is what makes it such a versatile dress code.
