5 Locations from TV Shows & Movies You Can Visit*
There are many reasons why people book a specific location for a holiday.. the weather, the price, the food, the culture and the sort of things you can do, to name a few, but did you know some people pick a specific destination because their favourite tv show or movie was filmed there? I’m not going to lie, while Once Upon a Time was filming in Vancouver, I always wanted to visit. The set was out in the open and fans could often see cast members and watch scenes unfold but alas I didn’t get before the show wrapped and now there is very little to even say the show filmed there. But there are some places that will forever look like how you remembered seeing on the screen, and those are what I’m going to share with you today.
Sporades Archipelago, Greece
After my parents stopped taking us to Florida, we started going to Greece, in particular Skiathos. Skiathos is part of a group of islands called Sporades archipelago. Skiathos along with another of the Sporades, Skopelos, were the backdrop for the film Mamma Mia. I have visited both these islands in my late teens, and they are undeniably beautiful. And although it is exciting to recognise places from the movie, the islands themselves are wonderful holiday destinations.
Northumberland, UK
If you’re looking for somewhere to use as a staycation, why not Northumberland? I’m so blessed to live so close to somewhere that is becoming more and more popular with movie and TV shows. Back in October I was incredibly lucky to actually see Chris Pine in person as he filmed an up and coming Netflix drama The Outlaw King. They spent a few days turning our town into London and it was incredible to see. We’ve also had Nicole Kidman and Colin Firth film here about 5 years ago. Not far down the road a few months back Jason Momoa was filming in the same place where the latest Transformers movie also filmed about 18 months ago. You could spend a week or so exploring Northumberland and find some many places where popular movies and shows filmed.
Ko Phi Phi, Thailand
Back to somewhere hot. If you’re planning on booking a luxury holiday to Thailand, you must check out Ko Phi Phi. Thailand wasn’t a huge popular tourist destination until The Beach was released back in the 90s. The beautiful exotic location was showcased on the big screen and then everyone wanted to go. Despite Thailand becoming an incredibly popular tourist destination over the last 20 or so years, Ko Phi Phi is still as beautiful as it looked in the movie and is definitely worth a visit!
Manhattan, USA
When you go to Manhattan you can’t walk a couple of blocks before you end up somewhere that was used as a back drop for a movie or TV show and it must be because it’s one of the most photographed cities in the world. I’m blessed to have visited Manhattan three times in the last 10 years an I’m still discovering new places. Of course you have some popular ones like Times Square and the Empire State Building which are almost always featured in something that is filmed in the city, but my other favourites include the Fire Station from Ghostbusters and the hotel Serena’s family live in in Gossip Girl.
Dubrovnik, Croatia
If you’re a big Game of Thrones fan, this is for you. In the past few years while I’ve been at the airport I’ve seen a lot of flights to Croatia. For a long time I didn’t understand why but I recently learned that a lot of Dubrovnik has been used as Kings Landing from the popular TV series and it’s easy to explore the area and recognise places used on the show. Not only that, but the warm Mediterranean climate makes it a great city break destination. The Game of Thrones wiki even documents all the places you will be able to recognise from the show, definitely have a read if you’re planning a visit!
I find it so exciting that some movies and shows film in locations you can actually visit, or places I have already visited. I recently watched Night at the Museum with my daughter and I was able to tell her I’d been to the museums from both the first and second film. Not only that, but I have photos to prove it!
