Unusual Things to Gift New Parents*

A new baby is a time to celebrate for most people, whether you’re the parents or not. I remember when I had LM, we were blessed to be showered in small gifts. LM got a pile of pink clothes (I was told I was having a boy so everything I had bought was gender neutral or blue), plush toys, she was well and truly spoilt! I was given flowers, bath products, alcohol since I’d gone nine months not drinking, a huge achievement for 23 year old me! And when a friend has a baby I love to buy for them. However, me being me, I like to be original and pick something a little unconventional to gift which is what today’s post is all about. Here are some of my ideas;

Baby Photo Shoot
Photographs are a special way to capture your children. I should know as I take thousands of LM. But aside from school photos and the odd modelling job, I have very few professional ones of her, and none in the early days. I honestly wish I had some. Taking a baby to a studio can seem like a daunting thing, so why not gift new parents a session of newborn photography at home? A photographer will come to your house and take professional photos in a familiar setting.

An Essentials Gift Basket
New parents are never going to be more thankful than a big basket filled with nappies, wipes, formula if that’s how the baby is being fed, Sudocrem, wine for the parents. Everyone likes to buy the pretty things but I can assure you the gift new parents (having been one myself) will be most thankful for are the every day essentials that they go through so much of especially in those early few months.

Baby Swim Session
Apparently taking babies swimming from an early age is one of the best thing you can do as a parent. In Australia parents are encouraged to start their children swimming from as young as a few weeks old. Since they spent 9 months in water at that early age they haven’t developed a fear yet and can even breathe under water. Why not gift a baby swim session to get the new parents started?

A Meal Voucher for the Parents
Having a baby is hard on a couple. It either brings you together or drives you apart. You’re sleep deprived, you’re worrying and you’re trying to figure out how to keep this bundle alive. If it’s not your first child you also have to balance a new baby with giving your other child or children the attention they need too. So a meal voucher for the parents will be appreciated. Make sure it doesn’t expired for a good year and you get bonus points if you’re offering to baby sit too!

Of course i’m basing this off what kind of things I’d like to have received as a new parent, if you’re unsure still why not see if the parents have a baby registry? These are becoming as popular as a wedding registry and they help parents get prepared for their new arrival!
