Embracing Being a Nerd Girl: Why It’s Cool to Love What You Love*

Once upon a time, being called a nerd probably wasn’t something you’d be particularly excited about. But thankfully, things have changed.

Today, being a nerd girl is something to celebrate. Whether you’re obsessed with books, gaming, science, fantasy, films, comics or a particular fandom, there’s absolutely nothing wrong with being unapologetically enthusiastic about the things you love.

So, if you’ve ever felt like you needed to hide your geeky interests to fit in, consider this your sign to stop.

Own Your Interests

Being a nerd girl means being passionate. Maybe you can spend hours talking about your favourite fictional universe, know far too many random facts about dinosaurs or have an entire bookshelf dedicated to fantasy novels.

Whatever your thing is, own it.

You don’t need to pretend you’re not interested just because someone else doesn’t understand it. Having hobbies and interests that genuinely make you happy is something worth celebrating.

And let’s be honest, being passionate about something is pretty cool.

Have Fun With Nerdy Fashion

One of the easiest ways to embrace being a girl geek is through fashion.

You don’t have to walk around dressed head-to-toe in merchandise if that’s not your thing. Nerdy fashion can be as subtle or as obvious as you want it to be.

Try pairing dark humor shirts with your favourite jeans, adding a character-inspired bag to an otherwise simple outfit or wearing jewellery inspired by your favourite book, film or game. Maybe a vintage gaming mesh jersey with high-waist shorts. Want something more gothic? Go for a dark style maxi dress and Converse.

You could even go all out with themed outfits, colourful accessories or geeky jumpers.

The best part? You get to decide what your nerdy style looks like.

And if someone recognises the reference on your T-shirt while you’re out and about, you’ve instantly found something to talk about.

Find Your People

One of the best things about being part of geek culture is discovering just how many other people love the same things you do.

From conventions and book clubs to gaming groups and online communities, there are loads of ways to meet fellow geeks.

Finding people who understand your interests can be brilliant, especially if you’ve ever felt like the odd one out.

You don’t have to be an expert either. You don’t need to know every comic book character or have played every video game. Just being enthusiastic is enough.

Don’t Worry About Being “Too Much”

There can still be pressure, particularly for women, to tone down the things they’re passionate about.

Don’t.

You can be a nerd girl who loves dresses. A gamer who loves makeup. A fantasy reader who enjoys football. A science geek who also happens to adore reality TV.

You don’t have to fit into one particular box.

Be Unapologetically You

Being a nerd girl isn’t about fitting a particular stereotype. It’s about embracing the things that make you you.

So wear the fandom T-shirt. Buy the collectible. Talk enthusiastically about your favourite fictional characters. Go to the convention. Read the book everyone else thinks is too long.

You don’t need permission to enjoy the things you love.

Because being a nerd isn’t something you should grow out of – it’s something you can grow into.
