5 Reasons Why You Should Treat Yourself to Nice Things*

This post contains a product placement for Daisy London

Like with most people at the turn of the year, I decided to set myself some resolutions. Not all of them were goals, some were just things I wanted to do to get the very most out of my life. One of these was not depriving myself of the nicer things in life. Yes, we’re talking the concept of “treat yourself” and if you’re a Parks & Recreation fan, you’ll know what I mean.

There is no escaping how truly horrible 2020 and 2021 were for a lot of people, and I could feel myself slipping into a hole of negative thinking. Every time something felt like it was going right, it did a complete u-turn and I felt once again I was back in that hole. Unfortunately that has continued into 2022 but as summer approaches, I’m hoping I can finally see the light!

Anyway, back to my resolution and why I made it. Since becoming a mother, way back in 2012, I’ve always put my daughter first. I never treated myself or really splashed out when it came to anything for me. My daughter is ten now. She’s happy and has everything she needs which is why it’s time to start treating myself too. In January I bought a new back. In February I bought myself new shoes. Then in March when it was my birthday, I bought a new dress. I didn’t fuss over the price, I saw it and bought it. And I felt good.

So here are 5 reasons why you should treat yourself to nice things;

It Sparks Your Joy

I’m a big Marie Kondo fan and I LOVED her two Netflix series, Tidying Up and Sparking Joy. I LOVE the concept of only holding onto what sparks joy and I always apply it to when I have a clear out. But I also apply it when I’m buying new things. Sometimes I just really need something pretty and shine that genuinely makes me happy. Like one of the beautiful necklaces from Daisy London. Daisy have the most gorgeous every day jewellery and view it as an expression of who you are. They have some truly unique pieces that will hopefully one day become a modern day heirloom.

They have sent me gorgeous bits from their current collection, and I can tell you that they 100% spark my joy!

You Work Hard

As I mentioned above, I’ve tried to not think of the cost if I truly see something I want and love. Within reason of course. If it passes my joy sparking test and the bills are all paid, I get it. Because I do work really hard. I’m the only person who brings any income into the house so why shouldn’t I spend any extra on little treats for myself as well as my kid? I don’t have anyone to consult, I don’t have to try and keep things fair. I’ve put in the work, I’ve paid all my bills and now I want to buy something that makes me happy. So I’m going to do just that.

It Finishes a Look

So it might not make ethical sense to keep buying new outfits for every occasion (see my comment about buying a new dress) but just because you don’t buy a whole new outfit, why should you finish it off with a new pair of shoes or some new rings? Just because you see something in a shop and the only reason why you want it is because it finishes a look, that doesn’t stop it being a valid reason. You might find next time you treat yourself you’re buying something to match that one item. And so the cycle continues.

Life Is Too Short

This isn’t a “oh my gosh you’re going to die some day” kinda paragraph. This is there is nothing worse than that feeling when you know you really wanted something then didn’t get it. Trust me, I know it well. So often I’ve regretted buying something, went back to the shop and it’s gone. Then I’ve spent hours searching eBay for it. Don’t do it to yourself. You want something, it sparks your joy, you can’t talk yourself out of it AND you have the money? Just get it!

You Deserve It and Need No Reason

That’s right. Technically you need to no reason because you deserve it. We all deserve a huge round of applause for making it through the last few years and to get through the next few, we deserve to treat ourselves and not feel guilty about it. So go out and do it!
