3 Ways to Subtly Introduce Christmas to Your Home*

Love it or hate it, Christmas is coming. If you’re not the type of person who likes the idea of tinsel adorning every viable surface in your home, you’re not alone. For many people, the thought of moving their home around to accommodate glaringly bright and garish decorations just doesn’t feel right.

If you’re one of those people, don’t worry. There are ways you can subtly decorate your home for the festive season without compromising the functionality of your house.

  1. DIY Leaf Glass Ornaments

If you have decorative glassware in your home that you’re not prepared to box up and replace with a Christmas ornament for a month, you can adapt it for the festivities.

Purchase some fake foliage and trim it to fit inside your existing glassware. If you want to add a bit of extra Christmas spirit, sprinkle in some fake red berries and give the foliage a spray of fake snow. This will look festive enough to appease those who call you Scrooge, but it’s not so intrusive or bothersome that you need to re-arrange your entire home to accommodate it.

This will look great in all areas of the home, whether it’s in a vase on your mantlepiece or in an empty candle jar in the bathroom. You could even introduce Christmas into your kitchen. If you’ve got an empty wine bottle, fill it with faux leaves and give it pride of place on your wine rack. It’s a subtle way of easing the festive season in and bringing attention to your wine display (which will undoubtedly be getting lots of use throughout the Christmas period anyway). Wine racks give us a lot of joy, so it’s about time we showed them some love – even if it is just for a few weeks.

  1. Make Your Own Christmas Card Garland

Greeting cards – although lovely in gesture – are easily one of the more frustrating parts of Christmas décor. If you’re tired of picking them up off the floor every time you walk past them, but if you feel bad for stashing them away out of view, we have the perfect solution in the form of a garland.

Purchase a nice piece of string (you could even use LED cool-touch lights) and attach the cards to the string. First, cut a length of string as long as your stair bannister. Cut more varying lengths of string and stick them to the back of each card. Next, secure the cards on the string to the larger piece of bannister-length string and attach the garland to the stairs.

This will not only keep the cards out of the way, but it will also add some festive cheer to your hallway whilst displaying the cards your family and friends have lovingly sent you in a minimalistic and unintrusive way.

  1. Christmas Scents

This one doesn’t require any DIY skills and is extremely modest yet effective in nature. Certain scents are synonymous with specific things, and Christmas definitely has a smell. Whether it’s the sweet smell of freshly baked cookies or the unmistakable notes of cinnamon and pine, even the biggest Scrooge can appreciate a good smell.

You can easily work a Christmas candle into your everyday décor. There’s always room on your dining table, coffee table or dressing table. What’s more, most Christmas candles come complete with nice imagery on the front which means you can instantly introduce Christmas into any area of your home (and make it smell lovely in the process).

However you feel about Christmas and all that comes with it, we could all use a little festive cheer right now, even if it is in the form of a few frosty leaves and a nice candle.
