5 Ideas to Make Your Child’s Birthday Special*

Remember the days where a child’s birthday was a tea party with close friends and lots of sausage rolls, invites on printed paper you bought in a supermarket and party bags with plastic toys and cake wrapped in a party napkin? You’ll find this sort of party is a rare breed these days. Like with everything if you are parenting in the age of social media, bigger is better when it comes to your kid! If you want your child’s birthday party to be something special, maybe it’s a special age, or you just really want to splash out, here are 5 ideas to do just that;

Rent a House
One of the reasons I’m yet to have a party at home is the size. Modern homes these days seem to be naturally built smaller which doesn’t give a lot of room to host a party, especially one with kids. But fear not! Did you know that there are big houses to rent specifically for holding a party? This is perfect if you have a big family, or your child has a lot of friends. There is more space for games, or to have entertainment, than you might have in your own house. They’re also perfect if you want to have a large group get away, rather than an actual party, partyhouses.co.uk have loads of choices all over the country so there is something for everyone.

Have a Theme
Themes are very popular with the Instagram mums because let’s face it, having everything matching from clothes, to decorations and even food really is aesthetically pleasing. I’ve been guilty of this over the years and although I’ve never hosted a proper party (a gathering at best), I do make sure LM’s outfit, the decorations and even the gift wrap match. I just can’t help it; I love how good it looks. As for a party, children love an excuse to dress up so you could go with a princess and knights or a superhero theme, or maybe even pirates, fairies and mermaids! You could go even historical and travel back in time during the Viking era, Renaissance, or Medieval periods. It is easy to find costumes, accessories, and even weapons nowadays for popular themes. There are so many possibilities. Pinterest is a great well of themed party ideas.

Go for a Location Party
If you don’t want to host a party for your little one yourself, get someone else to do it for you! When I was a kid a location party was a status symbol but these days it isn’t. A lot of places from restaurants to attractions offer birthday party packages and they do most of the work for you from the entertainment right down to the food so all you need to do is send out invitations and turn up!

Have Some Gimmicky Entertainment
What kid doesn’t love gimmicky entertainment and there is so much of it these days! You can hire karaoke machines, or having someone come to your home with exotic animals (LM went to a pets party and LOVED it) or you could even have a princess party and have Cinderella arrive at your home to tell stories and play games with the children. Your kid will probably thank you for any of these as it would really make their day special and even impress their friends!

Go Abroad
Finally, if like me you struggle with the social aspects of hosting a party, you could always book a holiday right over your child’s birthday. Going abroad is special in itself but going abroad over a birthday makes it even more special as they’ll feel like it’s just for them. Twice i’ve celebrated LM’s birthday with a Disney trip rather than a party and I know she appreciated them so much more than having all her friends from school over. At the end of the day, what made her birthday special was the fact that we were together in her favourite place and for me, that was worth everything.

As a parent, you want to make your child’s birthday special, whether they’re turning 1 or 21 and although living in the social media age can add a lot of stress, there is also the bonus of having the Internet at your finger tips to help making planning their perfect day a breeze.
