What is Multi Car Insurance and Do I Need It?*

There is no denying that you need car insurance in order to be able to drive legally on UK roads; but what you may not realise it that there are ways to keep the costs of car insurance down and save yourself some money. It’s important to ensure you have a good provider like One Sure Insurance.

This is particularly true if you have more than one car in your household; as this means that you are eligible for multi-car insurance.

But what is multi-car insurance and is it something that you are going to need?

The basics of multi-car insurance

As the name suggests, multi-car insurance is a policy that is designed to allow for a number of cars all to be insured by the same insurer, under one policy. Each car is covered on its own, albeit under the same policy, which means that every person can choose their own excess to pay out and can obtain their own no claims bonus each and every year.

How do they work?

In the most part, a multi-car insurance policy works the same as a standard car insurance policy, it lasts for one year and you can either choose to pay off the entire policy as one or over a 12 month period. You can include any one within the policy so long as they live at your address and have a car which is registered to the property too.

The policy will be due for renewal on a yearly basis, although, if you add cars at different times then this can have an impact on the length of time that the car is covered.

It is most common that 2 people will want to be included in a multi-car policy, however, each insurance provider will have a maximum number that they will insure and this can be as high as 6 cars. You will also find that you can insure 2 cars to one person within a policy.

Is it worthwhile doing?

If you are a couple who have a car each, you live in a multi-person house or you are a family with older children; then you could benefit from a multi-car policy. Not only do these policies make it much easier to organise car insurance and manage it in the long-term, but it actually helps to keep the costs down.

You will receive a discount through your insurance provider (the amount will depend on them) when you take out a multi-car policy and you will also have the peace of mind that you don’t have to worry about the type of cover that someone in your home has (usually this applies to parents and their children).

Whilst you are paying out for the insurance in one payment (be that a yearly payment or a monthly one) each person is going to be in charge of their own excess and they will also be able to build up their no claims discount too.

It really does make sense to have a multi-car policy for your home. Whether you do it to save money, to keep all your insurance in one place, or simply to keep your children protected; why not organise a policy today?
