Best Flooring for Pets and Children*

Our flooring comes into contact with many different elements, especially if you come from a household that has pets and children running about! Not only do they take up our time and energy, but also add to the wear and tear of our home, with the walls and floors taking the brunt of it. So, if you have little tots or furry creatures roaming your home, it’s important to think about your flooring choice before you buy it!

Durability

This is something we all look for when buying a new flooring, but this is even more important with busy family households. Something that’s going to stand up to lots of foot and paw traffic is needed – you certainly don’t want to be splashing out on a new floor for it to then look worn out straight away! With this in mind, wood, laminate or Luxury Vinyl Tiles is the way forward, with all three of them having impressive durability. Wood flooring notably is very hard wearing and likely to last a generation, with many homes still having the original wood floor. And if you are looking for other durable options, Flooring Las Vegas is more than happy to help and guide you with your choice.

Maintenance

When your day is packed full of running errands, working, cooking and taking care of little ones, a floor that’s easy to maintain is something that we’re sure you’re grateful for. Laminate and LVT are by far the easiest to keep clean, with little maintenance needed with only a quick sweep and a mop necessary. Although you can go one step further and buy specialist cleaner for both of these, warm soapy water does the job fine.

Although wood flooring is probably the most durable options, it does require slightly more attention than other options. You have to be careful with which chemicals you use to clean it with, for example a steam mop is a big no as the moisture can cause the wood to warp and swell over time.

Now of course, with pets and children scratches and stains are common. Even if you keep on top of keeping your pet’s claws trim, it’s always a worry! Not to mention children’s toys that can cause damage and messy meal times with all sorts being dropped on the floor! Wood flooring isn’t the best at dealing with this, as it can scratch and stain if not cleaned up quickly. Carpet as well is not a good choice, discolouring and looking trodden in after too much foot traffic, not to mention that it will stain in an instant!

With this being said, there is a way to eradicate stains and scratches with wood flooring. It can be sanded down and refinished a number of times depending on wear layer, so you get a few chances!

Therefore overall, we’d say that if you are wanting something totally carefree then LVT or laminate are the best. LVT is water, scratch and stain proof – you can’t say no to this! Laminate is only resistant to these, but still a worthy option.
