3 Ways to Make Your Home Feel Warmer This Winter*
The cold weather is here and I am not living for it! In fact, I think I can honestly say, I really hate the cold. And what I hate most about it is coming home to a cold house, yes, even with the central heating on. I am a creature of comfort and if I have to living in a country that spends 90% of the time without sun I want to feel warm and toasty in my home. Unfortunately, due to people buying into trends, you may find your new home or even current home feels quite cool as people have spent years trying to make smaller rooms feel big with white wall, floors, ceilings and furniture. If this is you, I’m here to share three ways you can make your home feel warmer this winter;
Carpet Your Floor
Yes, wood and laminate flooring looks amazing and is perfect for those insta perfect flatlays, but unless you’ve sprung for underfloor heating it’s going to be cold. Maybe rethink the wood floor, especially if you have small children in favour of carpet, it’ll keep those toes warm and can still look just as nice if you pick a colour that compliments your room. In my personal opinion two rooms should be carpeted, the bedroom and the lounge, these are the two rooms that need to be warm. Not only that, but carpeted homes hold the heat better which could mean a reduction on your heating bill.
Choose Thicker Curtains
Another way to trap heat in your room is by going with thicker curtains. Thick, heavy curtains keep the heat in when they’re closed creating a cosy environment and will help keep your heating bill at a minimum. You could go even further by investing in some thermal curtains (they’re a thing, my sister wants a pair) to use during the winter months. Thermal curtains are fully lined so they’re able to retain the heat of the room that’s often lost through the windows. It’s also suggested that thermal curtains provide some sound insulation so if you’re planning a rowdy Christmas party these could be your best friend.
Go With Warm Lighting
Unlike the carpet and thicker curtains, this point doesn’t actually add any more warmth to the room, instead it creates an illusion of warmth in the room. Warmer lighting has been proven to make the room feel warmer due to ambiance rather and that’s why everyone always claims their sitting room feels cosier with the addition of a Christmas tree and twinkling fairy lights. Although the extra lighting may add to your electricity bill, it might be worth it to keep that heating bill down.
When you live in England where the winter is long, the darkness seems endless and you sit indoors in a sweater, making sure your home is providing substantial warmth is vital to survival. You don’t need to pay through the nose for having your heating all day, you could simply heat proof your house. Although, wouldn’t it be nice if we could all go and hibernate during the winter?
