Is University the Right Path for Your Child?*

Students may have different reasons for going to university. For many, the main reason is to explore their favourite subject. Some students attend university in hope that it will lead to their chosen career. Others go to university for the social life and to experience living away from home.

Regardless of the reason, it is important for students to remember why they are in university, in order to best achieve their goals.

If you are trying to help your child decide whether or not to go to university, here are three useful tips from Brampton College

  1. When considering university, the most important advice you can give your child is to ensure that they choose a subject that they love. They mustn’t forget that main reason to go to university is to study and although there is the appeal of a great social life, they must have a genuine desire to learn about their chosen subject. This will make their university experience more fulfilling and rewarding in the end.
  2. Another key consideration for university is whether your child will be motivated enough to study independently, without being encouraged by a teacher or parent. Depending on your child, it might be more motivating to combine study with work experience in their chosen industry. It’s worth discussing the learning environment they feel they will benefit from the most.
  3. Is student debt is a concern? It is worth doing your research and carefully considering whether your child will be better off in the future financially if they go to university, join a school leaver programme or go straight into work.

Loans are available to cover university fees and living costs and repayments of these loans only begin when your child has graduated and earning at least £21k.
