90s Nostalgia I Share With My Daughter – From the Spice Girls to Polly Pockets*

I was born in 1988 (yep, I’m 31 now) which made me a true 90s kid. I got those baby years out of the way in the late 80s, and I was ready to embrace all the weird and wacky things the decade had to offer kids. And boy, was it a weird 10 years! The fashion, the music, the toys.. the 90s really had it all! It also had the best kids tvs shows and some of the best Disney movies. I got to play outside in our two, ride my bike, climb trees. I honestly don’t feel sad that we didn’t have a computer in my house until I was 13, and the only game consoles we had were a Sega that my parents packed away often as it took up room in the kitchen (one of the only two rooms with a TV) and my old grey Game Boy that doubled as a TV for my Barbie house!

In 2012, I became a mum and the world had changed a lot since I was a child myself. The technology era was truly here and the TV shows had changed completely! I thought my childhood was such fun, that I wanted to share some of it with LM, and thankfully due to EVERYONE loving the 90s, a lot of my favourites have made a comeback!

Spice Girls
Normally when a band makes a comeback I’m like “why?” especially if they’ve made a big deal out of their “last tour”.. however there is one band from my childhood who is an exception and that is the Spice Girls. The Spice Girls were the first band I ever truly love. And who didn’t? I had the dolls, the photos (remember those photo packets you could get and they’d have photos of the band in? I loved them), the CDs, sticker albums, the works. I wanted to BE Baby Spice. I wore my blonde hair in bunches, blew bubbles with gum and had a stash of lollipops in my little white backpack. She was my idol (her and the Pink Ranger from Power Rangers). They were my 90s. So when they announced their tour it was time to educate my child about the greatest girl band ever. Being a household of females, I’m all about that girl power!

I love that even all these years later, they’re still the same band I loved and you can see that in this hilarious video below. Walkers ran a competition to find the Spice Girls’ biggest fan, and unfortunately Dev bungled his chance to be just that, the real fan will be announced later this week but in the mean time you can check out some of the best entries.

And here is a rundown of some of the other 90s nostalgia I get to share with my 7 year old!

Pokemon
One of the first things from my childhood I shared with LM was Pokemon. I loved Pokemon and with LM’s love of small animals I thought it would appeal and I was right! She collects the cards and plays the games (but on a shiny Switch and pink DS, obviously) and if they have a toy range in Mcdonalds that’s the only place she wants to eat. As a kid I only watched the first 3 series so I’ve since caught up to Sun and Moon and I won’t lie, I still enjoy the story line as an adult!

Polly Pockets
I tried to keep LM away from the whole Polly Pocket revival, why? Because it’s an expensive addiction and one that I had at her age. I had so many Polly Pockets and I collected the magazines! While in California our friend bought LM one and that was it! Now we have 3 and every time we’re in a toy shop she eyes up more. They’ve changed a bit since my day, but they’re still the same concept and I cannot deny how much I love the popping colours they come in these days (mine were all pastel shades!)

Rugrats
Growing up Rugrats was one of my absolute favourite TV shows (along with Hey Arnold) and it was great sharing it with LM a year or so ago! The animation is a little bit dated compared to what she’s used but she enjoyed getting to know all the characters I loved as a kid. During the school holidays we revisited Rugrats in Paris because it’s currently on Netflix! Now she’s working her way through Recess as that’s on Disney Life.

Kitty Surprise
Although I didn’t have one personally, my sister did and she loved her Kitty Surprise. It was one of those things she saw on the TV and wanted it. I was caught completely off guard when 20 years later the same thing happened to my own kid. Kitty Surprise was top of LM’s Christmas list two years ago. They’re pretty much exactly the same (they really have that retro look to them) the only difference is there is one kitty that will make noise, that’s a new addition as I’d definitely remember my sister rolling on it in the night and setting it off…

Tamagotchi
During the Easter holidays we paid a visit to the World’s Biggest Primark in Birmingham and LB spotted a Tamagotchi (or digital pet as I’m pretty sure Tamagotchi is the brand name). It was only £1.50 so I picked it up for her as this is as close as she’s getting to another pet at the moment. When I was a kid I had the Disney Store version (obvs), it was one of the 101 Dalmatians and I loved it! It was so funny LM having her own although she wasn’t half as diligent with it as I was haha.

What 90s Nostalgia would you like to see making the come back? And more importantly, were you lucky enough to get tickets to see the Spice Girls?
