3 Ways to Avoid Being Distracted as a Driver*

If you’ve been a follower of my blog for a while, you’ll know I’m a firm advocate of staying safe on the roads. Where I live, there have been way too many fatal accidents that have tragically torn families apart. I have lost friends from school. And although it’s a lot to do with the safety of the roads around where I live, there are other things you can do to ensure that you stay safe, such as ensuring your car is suitable for the road.

Another way you can stay safe while driving is to avoid distractions. Did you know that the driving being distracted is a common cause of car accidents? It’s precisely why there is a sign at the front of the bus that asks you not to talk to the driver as that can be a distraction. Lease Car have put together an infographic of top distractions made up of the results from a survey of 1000 people. Have a look below to see if you’re guilty of any!

Here are three ways you can avoid getting distracted while driving;

Make a Driving Playlist
If you’re guilty of being distracted by music while on the road, why don’t you create a driving specific play list, or if you car is older, CD? Pick songs that you know will help you focus on the road regardless of the genre. If you have a specific play list and you like all the songs you won’t have to worry about taking your eyes off the road to skip or change it either.

Pull Over to Eat
If you’re worried about losing your concentration because you’re busy eating while driving long distance, schedule some time in to pull over and grab something and ensure you eat it before you start to move again. People become distracted trying to open food and if they drop something because they miss their mouse. That second lapse in concentration could cost someone their life.

Keep Those Kiddies Busy
As a parent, being distracted by children is the point i’m most familiar with. I have been in the car with a screaming child and I have been that child having an argument with my sibling. If you’re embarking on a long journey with children ensure they have something to occupy themselves within arms reach. If they start getting a little wild pull over and take a break. Don’t risk everyone becoming angry and distracting the driver.

Thankfully, there are a lot of good drivers on the roads who don’t get distracted, do take breaks and are prepared for long journeys, make sure you’re one of them!
