Things to Think About When Choosing a Bridesmaid Dress*
When planning a wedding there are so many different aspects to consider. From picking a venue, menu, music, a colour scheme. Discussing who to invite, where to sit them. There is just so much to do, so much so you may need help from outside family and friends. One of my best friends is getting married in December and she’s asked me to be a bridesmaid. I’ve never been a bridesmaid before so when she asked about a dress I had absolutely no idea where to begin. Thankfully she’s great and not at all a bridezilla so her main concern is our comfort. But still, it doesn’t change the things you need to think about when choosing a bridesmaid dress, and today I’m sharing what I’ll be looking for when my time comes later on this year;
When Is The Wedding?
My friend is getting married in December, in the UK. So it’s going to be cold. She wants us to be warm so when looking for a dress we have to pick something that can be layered up and still look pretty. On the other side of the coin, if the wedding you’re attending is in the middle of summer you might want to pick something that’s suitable for warm days and cool nights and won’t let you feel like you’re sweating up a storm.
What’s Comfortable?
You’re going to be wearing that dress all day in most cases, you don’t get the option to change like the bride. So make sure it fits well and it’s comfortable to wear, even after eating that wedding breakfast. Although boning can be preferable just think about when you’re full as an egg and trying to bust a move on the dance floor with the bride. It might make you look like a slim jim for photos but it’s not going to look as great if the seems burst after the evening buffet!
Is It The Right Colour?
Your bride will have her perfectly selected colour scheme and you must adhere to that. It doesn’t matter if you see the most perfect dress in red, if her colour scheme is blue you find a dress in blue. It’s her big day and you’re not there to take any spotlight off her. Thankfully Coast have a great selection of beautiful bridesmaid dresses and outfits in all colours so there is no reason to not find your perfect dress in a colour that makes the bride happy.
Does It Suit?
Back in the day bridesmaids were all expected to wear the same dress whether it looked good or not. Nowadays brides are a lot more accommodating and it’s actually quite common for all the bridesmaids to wear different styles of dresses in the same colour. If this is the case, pick something that suits. Women come in all different shapes and sizes, wear something you love and it’ll show on the photos. Remember these wedding photos will be keepsakes for the bride and groom!
Is It Practical?
Finally, practicality. If the wedding is on the beach of in the garden, you don’t want a dress that drags on the ground and gets dirty. If you have a small child to look after you don’t want it so short you flash your pants as you bend down to pick them up!
Being a bridesmaid is an honour and a privilege. You’re there to support the bride on her big day and share in that magical time. Your dress isn’t hugely important at the end of the day, not like hers anyway!
