The living room is where you spend most of your time. It’s the best room in the house for curling up with loved ones and relaxing, so it’s essential that the decor in here gives off a warm and welcoming vibe. And while cosy may mean different things to different people, overall it should be soft shapes, comforting textures and enveloping colour. Interiors experts James & Rose teach us how to perfect this look…

Create a Warm Glow
We all know that daylight is in short supply during the winter months, so make sure your living room is well lit. This can be done with yellow light bulbs rather than a harsh white light, and natural candles are ideal for when it starts to get cold. Dimmable ceiling lights can easily move the atmosphere from busy day to relaxing nighttime and just the flick of a switch. Want to go that extra step further? Install a wood burning stove – perfect for evenings in sheltering from the wind and snow.

Pile on the Textures
There’s nothing better than coming home after a cold commute and sinking into a comfortable couch and wrapping yourself up in soft and warm throws. Make sure you’ve got a sofa you’re proud of, and one that you’re excited to sit on at the end of the day. When accessorising your living room, opt for a multitude of cushions and blankets of all colours and textures. From chunky knit, felt and faux fur – choose materials that are going to maximise the cosiness in your room – the key is to focus on layering. For an extra touch of luxury, add in high quality wool and silk.

Add Warm Metallic Touches
The metallic trend is one that has skyrocketed over the past couple of years, and it shows no signs of slowing down. It’s also incredibly well-suited for winter where warm touches are needed to shine through the white and grey. Small sparkles of copper, brass and rose gold can really bring a room to life, like candle holders, picture frames and cushions. To take the trend even further, use a metallic lamp or lampshade to cast a warm and opulent glow across the walls.

Bring The Outdoors In
We all know that plants are good for our wellbeing. Not only do they clean our air, they can boost our mood and bring an often much-needed touch of nature to an interior environment. House plants come in all shapes and sizes, so whether you’re styling high Victorian ceilings or decorating a one bedroom flat, there are plenty of options out there.

Add Personality
We’ve already talked about how it’s important to have a surplus of pillows, cushions and throws scattered about your living room, but don’t forget the other accessories too. A thick plush rug can be the perfect way to bring a warm touch, especially if you have wooden floors – you won’t be able to resist wiggling your toes into the textures!

But remember that it’s your home, and that should be evident when you look around the room. Plenty of photographs on the wall and resting on surfaces will bring touches of personality and life to the room, and they’ll remind you of all the wonderful memories you have with your loved ones.
