Helping Your Teen Find Herself: Encouraging Confidence and Self-Expression*

The teenage years can be a bit of a rollercoaster. One minute your daughter is happily watching her favourite childhood TV show, and the next she’s experimenting with a completely new style, discovering new interests and insisting that she definitely knows more than you do! But you will still need to help your teen find herself.

While it can be tempting to worry about all these changes, discovering who you are is a completely normal part of growing up. As a parent, you don’t need to have all the answers. Sometimes, the best thing you can do is give your teen the space and support to figure things out for herself.

Here are a few ways you can help your teen explore who she is and become more confident in the process.

Let Her Explore Her Style

Fashion can be a huge part of teen self-expression. Clothes give young people a chance to experiment with different personalities, trends and aesthetics while figuring out what feels like “them”.

And if you’ve noticed your teen suddenly wearing things that look suspiciously familiar, you’re not imagining it!

Y2K fashion is back, bringing with it low-rise jeans, baby tees, colourful accessories, the y2k tank top (thankfully not doubled up this time), cargo trousers, y2k shirts, chunky trainers and plenty of nostalgia from the late ’90s and early 2000s.

You might look at an outfit and wonder why anyone would willingly wear it, but that’s not really the point. Letting your teen experiment with fashion can help her work out what she likes and feel more comfortable expressing herself.

Of course, there are still boundaries around things like school dress codes and age-appropriate clothing, but within those boundaries, give her some freedom to have fun.

Encourage Her Interests

Your teen might suddenly develop a passion for something you’ve never heard of. Maybe she’s into gaming, books, music, sport, art, photography or a particular fandom.

Try to show an interest, even if you don’t completely understand it.

Ask questions. Let her tell you why she loves it. You might even discover something you enjoy together.

Interests can play a huge role in developing teen identity, and having something you’re passionate about can be a great confidence boost.

Give Her Space to Make Choices

It’s natural to want to protect your child from making mistakes. But part of growing up is learning how to make decisions for yourself.

Where appropriate, let your teen choose what she wants to wear, how she spends her free time or which hobbies she wants to explore.

She won’t always make choices you agree with – and that’s OK.

Making small decisions now helps her develop the confidence and independence she’ll need as she gets older.

Remind Her That She Doesn’t Have to Fit In

Teenagers can face enormous pressure to look, act and dress a certain way.

Social media can make this even harder, with seemingly perfect people appearing everywhere you look.

Remind your teen that she doesn’t have to follow every trend or fit neatly into one particular “aesthetic”. It’s completely fine to change her mind, try something new or simply be different.

Let Her Be Herself

Helping your teen find herself isn’t about telling her who she should become. It’s about giving her the confidence to explore, make mistakes, discover what she loves and ultimately decide that for herself.

So whether she’s embracing Y2K fashion, discovering a new hobby or going through a phase that leaves you slightly baffled, try to give her room to explore.

She might not have herself completely figured out yet – and that’s perfectly fine.

She’s growing, learning and becoming her own person. And sometimes, the best thing a parent can do is simply be there while she works it out.
